Subjective intertemporal substitution

چکیده
Using subjective expectations data from the New York Fed’s Survey of Consumer Expectations (SCE), we estimate elasticity intertemporal substitution (EIS)—the response expected consumption growth to changes in real interest rate. This unique set allows us Euler equation with no auxiliary assumptions on properties expectations, which are instead necessary when using choice data. We find a EIS about 0.5, consistent results much literature. In addition, planned displays excess sensitivity income changes, even among households not facing substantial liquidity constraints.

Intertemporal Substitution at Work ?
Preliminary. Do not distribute. In this paper, we report the results from a large-scale field experiment with bicycle messengers. We increased the messengers comission rate, their sole form of compensation by 25 percent during four weeks. We find a positive and large intertemporal elasticity for the supply of hours. In response to the wage increase, messengers work roughly 30 percent more shift...

متن کاملIntertemporal Substitution in Macroeconomics*
Modern neoclassical business cycle theories posit that the observed fluctuations in consumption and employment correspond to decisions of an optimizing representative individual. We estimate three first-order conditions that represent three tradeoffs faced by such an optimizing individual. He can trade off present for future consumption, present for future leisure, and present consumption for p...
متن کاملIntertemporal Substitution and Storable Products
Storable products allow consumers to time their purchases to exploit price fluctuations. It has been documented that during promotions consumers buy more. The additional purchases are potentially intended not only for current use, but to be stockpiled for future consumption. This paper discusses the predictions of a consumer inventory model and reviews the available evidence. We then discuss th...
متن کاملLabour supply and intertemporal substitution
This paper concerns the estimation of an intertemporal model for labour supply and consumption that recognises the presence of nonworkers and which is cast in a structural optimising framework that allows for uncertainty. Through the utilisation of a micro-data source that measures consumption and labour supply we are able to estimate a flexible preference model which incorporates comer solutio...
